Why your business deserves more than Wix

Posted on Posted in Blog

EntrepreneurYou decided to start a business! Congratulations!

Whether this is a side hustle, or you made the decision to risk it all and become an entrepreneur, it’s a really exciting time for you.  You’ve come up with a product or service, created a business plan and strategy and now you need a website.  Where do you go?

There are a lot of options out there depending on your budget, knowledge, and commitment to your business. To be honest, it can be really confusing on what the right choice is.  Drag and drop website builders, like Wix, are becoming more and more popular because they are super easy for anyone to use and you’re able to avoid the learning curve that WordPress has, but your business deserves more.

Let me break it down for you.

First off, I do understand why people use Wix. It’s easy to use, has hundreds of templates and makes you look like a legit business…oh and it’s free or very inexpensive.  At least that’s what you might think! (I’ll share more about this later!)  I get it! Anyone can hop online and create something that looks visually appealing without knowing how to code or paying someone to do it. It only takes you a few hours at most to be open for business.

Here’s what you might be missing though.
  • You do have a lot of templates to choose from, however, once your site is done, you’re stuck there. You aren’t able to move your files, change your template or do anything but start all over. It’s a pretty sticky platform. If down the road, you make the decision to move from a drag and drop to a website platform, you are going to be faced with a lot of issues with trying to export code, which can be exhausting and not worth the effort on just a chance.
  • Wix hosts your site for you so although that may seem like a really great thing, it’s not. There are several hosting companies out there and it’s those hosts that determine the speed of your website. Because they host it, there’s nothing you can do to increase the speed of your site.  Why is speed a big deal? Oh…it plays into your SEO, which is a really big deal!
  • Since we are talking SEO, it’s probably a good time to talk about the limitations. Wix does give you the basic tools for SEO, but most of the time that I have noticed, they aren’t being used. You are also limited depending on how you are using your site. If you plan on blogging, this is not the solution because Wix adds an extra string to the URL which makes it less than ideal for SEO.   Wix will generate an automated XML sitemap for you, but you can’t access it or customize it to your needs. What I’m saying is, you have some things there but still you’re still missing pieces of that puzzle.
  • You are limited on what you can do and because of that limitations, your website is not able to grow as your business grows. There are features that just aren’t available. Having the full solution to add components as your business needs it makes so much more sense than the thought of having to start over each time you evolve.
  • Wix is more expensive than you realize. Sure, there’s no (or very little) upfront costs, but you are missing out on sales and opportunities by not having all of the features and the functionality of the site, which is really what makes a website powerful. Google doesn’t care about that pretty picture or how cute the buttons are that you customized. It’s looking at other pieces to rank you in their search engines.

Here’s what Wix does do, it gives you a holding place on the internet so that you have a web presence. I don’t think there is anything terribly wrong with starting there if that is what your budget and knowledge allows for, but in the back of your mind, I would plan to move to a different platform that gives you all of the features and functionality that you will need as your business grows. If you are serious about your business, then be serious about your website too.
